Question 1

Where will Grace and Leo meet?

You hear a woman leaving a message for a friend.

Show the text

Hi Leo, it's Grace. About tonight. I know we said we'd meet outside the cinema, but it's going to be really cold, so let's not stand around in the street. There's that little café opposite the station, the one with the green door. Let's meet in there at seven, have a hot drink, and then walk to the cinema together. It only takes five minutes from there. Oh, and don't come by bus. The road by the park is closed tonight because of roadworks.

Show answer

Correct answer: B — In a café opposite a railway station

Why? Grace changes the plan: they will meet in the café opposite the station, not outside the cinema. The road by the park is closed, so the bus stop is wrong.

Question 2

What does the man buy?

You hear a man talking to a shop assistant.

Show the text

Assistant: Can I help you?

Man: Yes, I'm looking for a present for my dad. I was thinking of some gloves, but these grey ones are a bit small for him.

Assistant: We've got bigger sizes in the back, but only in brown, I'm afraid. What about one of these hats? They're very warm.

Man: Hmm, he never wears hats. Actually, he's always losing umbrellas. How much is this black one?

Assistant: Twelve pounds. And it folds up really small.

Man: Perfect. I'll take the black umbrella, then.

Show answer

Correct answer: A — A black umbrella

Why? The gloves are too small and his father never wears hats, so the man buys the black umbrella.

Question 3

What did the young woman do on Saturday?

You hear a young woman talking about her weekend.

Show the text

My weekend was supposed to be really active. On Saturday morning I was going to go cycling in the hills with my brother, but his bike had a flat tyre and we couldn't get it fixed anywhere. So instead I went with my mum to the school where she works. They were having a cake sale to raise money for the library, and I spent the whole day selling chocolate cakes. On Sunday I finally got some exercise. I played in a volleyball match on the beach with my team. We lost, but it was fun.

Show answer

Correct answer: C — She sold cakes at a school.

Why? The cycling trip did not happen, and the volleyball match was on Sunday. On Saturday she sold cakes at her mother's school.

Question 4

What does Martin want Sara to bring to the meeting?

You hear a man leaving a message for a colleague.

Show the text

Hi Sara, it's Martin. Just a quick message about tomorrow's meeting with the hotel group. I've booked the big room on the third floor, and it already has a projector, so don't worry about that. I'll bring my laptop with all the slides on it. The thing I really need is the leaflets we had printed last week. Could you bring the box from your office? I'd like to give one to everyone at the end. Thanks!

Show answer

Correct answer: A — A box of printed leaflets

Why? The room already has a projector and Martin is bringing his own laptop. He asks Sara to bring the box of leaflets.

Question 5

Which part of the flat does the woman like best?

You hear a woman talking about her new flat.

Everyone asks me about the balcony, and yes, it's nice to have one, even though it's only big enough for two chairs. The living room's fine too, but the windows face north, so it's quite dark in the afternoon. But the room I really love is the kitchen. It isn't huge, but there's a big wooden table where I can sit and work, and I can see the old castle from the window while I'm cooking.

Show answer

Correct answer: B — A kitchen with a wooden table

Why? She mentions the balcony and the living room, but she says the room she really loves is the kitchen.

Question 6

How will the friends travel to the concert?

You hear two friends talking about a concert.

Show the text

Man: Shall we drive to the concert on Friday? I can borrow my sister's car.

Woman: I'd rather not. Parking near the stadium costs a fortune, and the traffic afterwards will be terrible.

Man: Well, there's a train, but the last one back leaves at half past ten, and the concert doesn't finish till eleven.

Woman: What about cycling? It's only twenty minutes, and there's a free place to leave bikes right by the entrance.

Man: Good idea, as long as it doesn't rain! OK, let's do that.

Show answer

Correct answer: C — Two bicycles

Why? Parking is too expensive and the last train leaves before the concert ends, so they agree to cycle.

Show the text

Dan: So, what did you think of last night's class? I thought the teacher was great.

Holly: She was, wasn't she? I wasn't sure about it at first. I mean, thirty pounds for two hours seemed like a lot. But honestly, I came home with so many ideas. I never thought I'd be able to make fresh pasta, and now I can't wait to try it again.

Dan: Me too. Though she did go a bit fast when she showed us the sauce.

Holly: Did she? I didn't notice. I could follow everything.

Show answer

Correct answer: C — She learned more than she expected.

Why was the man late this morning?

You will hear a man telling a colleague about his journey to work.

Show the text

Ravi: Oh, the train was fine for once. It was the walk from the station. They've closed the bridge over the river for repairs, so I had to go all the way round by the old market. That added about twenty minutes.

Woman: Oh no. How long is it closed for?

Ravi: Two weeks, apparently. I think I'll bring my bike next week and go along the river path instead.

Show answer

Correct answer: A — He had to walk a longer way.

Sam: I know, but I've got so much work on at the moment.

Nina: You can take your laptop if you really have to. And the cottage I've booked has two bedrooms, so you'd have your own room. Mum says she'll look after the dog.

Sam: Hmm. Let me check my diary tonight and I'll tell you tomorrow.

You will hear two neighbours talking about a new sports centre.

Show the text

Woman: Have you been to the new sports centre yet?

Man: Yes, on Saturday. The pool's lovely, and all the gym machines are brand new.

Woman: I thought the gym was a bit small, actually. The old one had more space. But my real problem is that it closes at eight. I don't finish work until seven, so I've got no time at all.

Man: I know, it's crazy. Most people can only go in the evening. They really need to stay open until ten, like the old place did.

Woman: Exactly. Maybe we should write to the council.

Show answer

Correct answer: B — should stay open later in the evening.

Why? The woman complains that it closes at eight, and the man agrees it should stay open until ten. Only the man is happy with the equipment.

Tom: By Friday. Even if I don't get the job, I think I did my best.

Question 13

Why did the woman join the book club?

You will hear a woman telling a friend about a book club.

Show the text

Man: I didn't know you were in a book club, Elena.

Elena: I only joined last month. I've always read a lot, so that wasn't the reason. But since I moved here for my new job, I didn't really know anyone outside work. A neighbour told me about the club, and now I've got a group of friends I see every week.

Man: Do you all read the same book?

Elena: Yes, and then we talk about it over coffee. Some members write their own stories too, but I'm not really interested in that.

Show answer

Correct answer: B — to meet new people in the area

You will hear a radio presenter talking about a summer festival. Complete the notes.

Show the text

Presenter: Good morning, and welcome to What's On. This week I want to tell you about the Ashwick Bay Summer Festival, which is back for its twelfth year. It's one of my favourite weekends of the summer, and the programme looks better than ever.

Presenter: This year the festival runs for three days instead of two, starting on Friday the eighteenth of July. Most events take place in Harbour Park, but the opening concert on Friday evening will be held on the beach, right next to the lighthouse, so bring something warm to wear.

Presenter: As always, there are lots of activities for families. The most popular one last year was the kite-making workshop, and it's back again. Children can make their own kite and then fly it in the park on Sunday afternoon. Places are limited, so book early on the festival website. There's also face painting and a puppet show every morning in the big tent near the main gate.

Presenter: If you're interested in food, don't miss the cooking competition on Saturday. Local chefs will have just forty minutes to make a meal using only fish caught in the bay that morning. You can watch for free, and you might even get a taste of the results.

Presenter: Tickets for the whole weekend cost twenty-five pounds for adults, and children under twelve go free. If you only want to come for one day, a day ticket is ten pounds. Remember that there's no parking at Harbour Park itself, so the organisers are running a special bus from the railway station every fifteen minutes. The bus is free if you show your festival ticket to the driver.

Presenter: Finally, the festival is looking for volunteers. You don't need any experience, just a friendly smile. Volunteers get a free festival T-shirt and a weekend ticket. To find out more, call in at the tourist information office on Market Street.

Presenter: That's all for this week. Enjoy the sunshine!

Part 4: Interview

You hear a radio interview. You hear it twice. For each question, choose the right answer (A, B or C).

You will hear a radio interview with a woman called Isla Brennan, who started a repair café.

Show the text

Interviewer: My guest today is Isla Brennan, who started the Northgate Repair Café two years ago. Welcome, Isla.

Isla: Thanks for inviting me.

Interviewer: So, how did it all begin?

Isla: Well, it started with a toaster, believe it or not. My flatmate's toaster stopped working, and she just put it in the bin. I took it out again, because I was sure it could be fixed. I'm not an engineer or anything, I work in a bank, but I watched a few videos online, and it turned out to be a loose wire. It took me ten minutes. I was so annoyed that something almost new nearly ended up as rubbish, and I thought: there must be lots of people throwing things away just because they don't know how to repair them.

Interviewer: And so you organised an event.

Isla: Yes. I booked a room at the community centre for one Saturday and put up some posters. I was worried that nobody would come. In fact, about thirty people turned up with broken things, which was more or less what I'd hoped for. What I really didn't expect was that so many of them offered to help. By the end of the day I had a list of fifteen people who wanted to come back as volunteers.

Interviewer: Who are these volunteers?

Isla: All sorts. Some people imagine they're all retired engineers, but actually we've got students, a hairdresser, a couple of teachers. Nobody gets paid. They just enjoy it. And what they like best is when a visitor sits down next to them and learns how to do the repair. We don't want to be a free repair shop. The idea is that people go home able to fix the next thing on their own.

Interviewer: What kind of things do people bring?

Isla: We see a lot of clothes that need a new button or zip, and bikes with flat tyres, especially in summer. But the thing that comes through the door more than anything else is small kitchen equipment. Kettles, coffee machines, toasters, of course!

Interviewer: Is the café doing well?

Isla: Very well, in a way. We get enough donations to pay for tools and the room, so money isn't a worry. And we've got more volunteers than we need on most days. The trouble is the room itself. It's simply too small now. Some Saturdays there's a queue outside the door, and people have to wait an hour. We're looking for somewhere larger at the moment.

Interviewer: Finally, what would you say to someone who wants to start a repair café in their own town?

Isla: Don't try to do everything at once. Some people want to open every week from the beginning, with a big website and lots of equipment, and then they get tired and give up. Begin with one event, see who comes, and let it grow little by little. That's what worked for us.

Interviewer: Isla Brennan, thank you very much.

Question 20

Why did Isla start the repair café?
