How the online test works

  • Invitation: you get 30 days to take the test; most people take it online.
  • Device: a desktop, laptop or tablet with a webcam, not a phone, and the Chrome or Safari browser.
  • Monitoring: IRCC watches you through your webcam while you take the test.
  • Timer: 45 minutes that cannot be paused; the test is submitted automatically at the end.
  • Accommodation: you can ask to take the test in person (on paper, orally or in Braille, for example) or by Microsoft Teams.

Results and retakes

  • Pass: at least 15 of 20 (75%). You are then invited to a citizenship ceremony, sometimes after an interview.
  • Retakes: you have 3 chances to pass within the 30 days of your invitation.
  • After 3 fails: you are invited to a hearing with a citizenship official; if you fail the hearing, the application is refused.
  • Result: you do not see your result when you sign in to the test.

Good to know

  • One official guide: IRCC says the only official study guide is Discover Canada, free online, as a PDF, eBook, audio or paper copy.
  • Older figures: the guide was published in 2012, so some numbers in it (for example population) are out of date; our questions avoid figures that change.
  • Our questions: all multiple choice with four options; the real test also has true or false questions.
  • Language too: applicants aged 18 to 54 also need CLB 4 in English or NCLC 4 in French.
