Marcus T.

Does anyone know a good place to get a bike repaired around here? The shop on Birch Road closed last month, and the next nearest one I found has a three-week waiting list. It's just a flat tire and some loose brakes, so nothing major. I'd honestly try fixing it myself if someone could lend me the right tools for an afternoon. Happy to return the favor. I bake a mean banana bread!

Erfundener Übungstext

Frage 39

What is Marcus mainly asking for?

Antwort anzeigen

Richtige Antwort: A — Help with getting his bicycle repaired or fixing it himself

Warum? He asks where to get his bike repaired, or for tools so that he can fix it himself; both are ways of getting the bike repaired.

Fehler melden

Frage 40

Why does Marcus mention banana bread?

Antwort anzeigen

Richtige Antwort: B — To offer something in return for help

Warum? 'Happy to return the favor' shows that he would give something back; 'a mean banana bread' is informal for a very good banana bread.

Wissenschaftlicher Text Seed Dispersal by Animals

Plants cannot move from place to place, yet many species manage to spread their seeds over remarkable distances. One of the most effective strategies relies on animals. Some plants surround their seeds with sweet, brightly colored fruit. Birds and mammals eat the fruit, and the seeds pass through their digestive systems unharmed, often to be deposited far from the parent plant. In some species, this journey through an animal's gut actually helps the seed: the outer coat is softened, so the seed can absorb water and sprout more easily.

Other plants take a less generous approach. Instead of offering food, they produce seeds covered in tiny hooks that catch on fur or feathers. An animal brushing past may carry these seeds for kilometers before they finally fall off.

Dispersal matters because seeds that land directly beneath the parent plant must compete with it for light, water and nutrients. They are also more likely to be found by insects and fungi that gather where the parent grows. By traveling, a seed increases its chances of reaching an open space where it can grow without such pressure.

Erfundener Übungstext

Frage 41

What is the passage mainly about?

Antwort anzeigen

Richtige Antwort: C — How animals help plants spread seeds, and why this matters

Warum? The passage describes two ways plants use animals (fruit and hooks) and then explains why travelling away from the parent plant helps a seed.

Fehler melden

Frage 42

According to the passage, how can passing through an animal's gut help a seed?

Antwort anzeigen

Richtige Antwort: B — It softens the outer coat so the seed can take in water.

Warum? The passage says the journey through the gut softens the outer coat, 'so the seed can absorb water and sprout more easily'.

Fehler melden

Frage 43

The word 'generous' in the passage is closest in meaning to

Antwort anzeigen

Richtige Antwort: C — willing to give

Warum? Hooked seeds take 'a less generous approach' because, 'instead of offering food', they give the animal nothing; 'generous' means willing to give.

Fehler melden

Frage 44

How do seeds with hooks travel away from the parent plant?

Antwort anzeigen

Richtige Antwort: D — They catch on the fur or feathers of passing animals.

Warum? The hooks 'catch on fur or feathers', and an animal brushing past may carry the seeds for kilometers.

Fehler melden

Frage 45

Why does the author mention insects and fungi?

Antwort anzeigen

Richtige Antwort: D — To add another danger for seeds that stay near the parent

Warum? After competition for light, water and nutrients, the author adds a second danger near the parent: insects and fungi that gather there are more likely to find the seed.

Wissenschaftlicher Text Green Roofs in Cities

In many cities, flat rooftops are among the largest unused surfaces. Increasingly, architects are covering them with soil and plants to create what are known as green roofs. Although they are often promoted for their appearance, their main benefits are practical.

First, green roofs help manage rainwater. On an ordinary roof, rain runs off immediately and flows into drains, which can become overwhelmed during heavy storms. The soil and plants on a green roof absorb much of this water and release it slowly, reducing the risk of flooding in the streets below.

Second, plants keep buildings cooler. A dark roof absorbs heat from the sun all day, but a layer of vegetation shades the surface and cools the air as water evaporates from the leaves. As a result, the floors directly beneath a green roof may need less air conditioning in summer.

Green roofs are not without drawbacks, however. They are heavier than conventional roofs, so older buildings may need to be strengthened before one can be installed. They also require regular maintenance, particularly in their first years, when the plants are becoming established.

Erfundener Übungstext

Frage 46

What is the author's main purpose in the passage?

Antwort anzeigen

Richtige Antwort: A — To explain the practical benefits and drawbacks of green roofs

Warum? The passage presents two practical benefits (rainwater and cooling) and then two drawbacks (weight and maintenance). It says the main benefits are practical, not their appearance.

Fehler melden

Frage 47

According to the passage, how do green roofs reduce the risk of flooding?

Antwort anzeigen

Richtige Antwort: A — They hold rainwater and let it go gradually over time.

Warum? The soil and plants 'absorb much of this water and release it slowly', so the drains are not overwhelmed all at once.

Fehler melden

Frage 48

The word 'overwhelmed' in the passage is closest in meaning to

Antwort anzeigen

Richtige Antwort: B — unable to cope

Warum? Drains that become 'overwhelmed during heavy storms' receive more water than they can handle, so they are unable to cope.

Fehler melden

Frage 49

What can be inferred about a building with a dark, conventional roof in summer?

Antwort anzeigen

Richtige Antwort: A — Its top floor is likely to get warmer than a floor under a green roof.

Warum? A dark roof 'absorbs heat from the sun all day', while vegetation shades and cools the surface; so the floors under a dark roof are likely to be warmer.

Fehler melden

Frage 50

Which of the following is mentioned as a disadvantage of green roofs?

Antwort anzeigen

Richtige Antwort: B — Some buildings may need to be strengthened first.

Warum? Because green roofs are heavier, 'older buildings may need to be strengthened before one can be installed'.
